TNPL 2023: Batter Gets Run-out But Nobody Notices, Ends up Smashing 44 off 32 Balls

What actually happened?

The incident happened during the 19th match of TNPL 2023 between Lyca Kovai Kings (LKK) and Salem Spartans (SS). It was the third over of the first inning, and 2nd for Abhishek Tanwar. On the fourth ball, A Tanwar bowled a fuller delivery around the off stump, and the left-hander S Sujay pushed the ball towards the cover point fielder.

Sujay and his partner Sai Sudharsan went for a run and the fielder at cover point through the ball toward the non-striker’s end. When S Sujay was near the non-striker’s crease, he found that the ball is coming towards him, and jumped in the air.

The ball went under S Sujay’s leg and hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end. No part of S Sujay’s body was grounded when the ball hits the stumps. So technically the batter was run out.

No one noticed a run-out

There was no appeal from any of the Salem Spartans players as they didn’t notice that Sujay’s leg is in the air. The umpire too didn’t give much attention as no appeal was made by the opposition team.

After a while, the replay shows on the big screen and then SS saw that it’s a run-out. They went for a referral but the on-field umpire deemed it too late.

Sujay continues his inning and went on to score 44 runs off 32 balls with 6 fours.

Lyca Kovai Kings vs Salem Spartans

Before that, SS won the toss and elected to field first. LKK lost their first wicket too early and then S Sudharsan joins S Sujay at the crease. In the same over, that incident happened as we discussed above.

Sujay and Sudharsan added 75 runs for the 2nd wicket. Sai Sudharsan continues to play well in TNPL 2023. His purple patch continues since his IPL stint with Gujarat Titans (GT). And S Sujay also compliments him very well.

K Gandhi broke the partnership in the 11th over when he got S Sujay. The batter was on 10 when that unnoticed run-out incident happened. And then went on to add 34 more runs after that. Also, it helped LKK to recover as they lost their first wicket in just 3rd over.

In the next over, S Sudharsan also got out. He scored 41 off 28 balls with 6 fours. With the help of Ram Arvindh’s quick-fire 50 off just 22 balls, LKK managed to score 199 runs on the board. Sunny Sandhu was the pick of the bowler for SS in the first inning.

No real partnerships for SS in a run chase

When Salem Spartans came out to chase a target, they continue to lose wickets at regular intervals. They bundled out for just 120 runs in 19 overs. K Gowtham Thamarai Kannan took 3 wickets in the inning. Captain Shahrukh Khan also took 2 wickets while M Siddharth, J Subramanyan, M Mohammad, and V Yudheeswaran also managed to take one wicket each.

Lyca becomes the first team to qualify in the top 4 in TNPL 2023

LKK won the game by 79 runs and becomes the first team to qualify for the next stage in TNPL 2023. Their last league stage match will be against Siechem Madurai Panthers (SMP). The day affair will take place in Tirunelveli on July 2. LKK will look to finish well in the league stage and then their main focus will be at the qualifiers. They will look to finish at the top 2 so that if they lose the first qualifier, they will get another chance to qualify for the final of TNPL 2023.

On the other hand, Salem Spartans is sitting at No. 7 in the points table with only one win in 5 games. Their only win came against Ba11sy Trichy by 5 wickets. They have two league-stage matches left against IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans and Dindigul Dragons on July 1 and 3 respectively. Their chances of reaching in the top 4 are looking bleak this year.
