SL vs IND: India have suffered another setback ahead of their two-Test series against Sri Lanka, with Sai Sudharsan ruled out of the entire tour because of a right toe stress reaction. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the news on August 9, ending Sudharsan’s hopes of featuring in the series that begins in Galle on August 15. The left-handed batter had been undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru, but the medical team felt he needed more time before returning to competitive cricket.
Sarfaraz Khan has been called into the Test squad as Sudharsan’s replacement. The Mumbai batter will join the Indian team in Colombo before the squad travels to Galle for the opening Test.
Sudharsan’s Injury Ends His Sri Lanka Hopes
Sudharsan’s absence is a disappointment, particularly because he had made a strong case for the No. 3 position during India’s recent red-ball assignments. The 24-year-old was originally included in India’s squad for the Sri Lanka Tests, but his availability was subject to fitness clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence. That clearance never came.
According to the BCCI, Sudharsan has made “significant progress” while recovering from the right toe stress reaction and is being closely monitored by the medical team. However, the board has decided against rushing him back for the series.
His recent performances for India A in Sri Lanka had made his absence even more frustrating. Sudharsan scored 132 in the first unofficial Test against Sri Lanka A and followed it with a superb 168 in the second match. Those innings showed that he was comfortable in Sri Lankan conditions and was building useful red-ball momentum before the injury interrupted his plans.
Now, instead of walking into the Test series as India’s likely No. 3, Sudharsan will have to concentrate on completing his recovery.
Sarfaraz Khan Gets Another India Opportunity
Sarfaraz Khan’s selection gives him another chance to strengthen his place in the Test setup.
The 28-year-old has already played six Tests for India and has scored 371 runs at an average of 37.10, including three half-centuries. His experience at the international level appears to have worked in his favour when the selectors considered Sudharsan’s replacement.
Sarfaraz was not part of the original Sri Lanka Test squad. His call-up came after Sudharsan was officially ruled out, with Shaik Rasheed also reported to have been among the players considered for the vacancy.
The move gives India another middle-order batter, although Sarfaraz may not walk straight into the playing XI. That is because another player has already made a strong claim for the No. 3 spot.
Devdutt Padikkal Makes His Case
Devdutt Padikkal could now be the biggest beneficiary of Sudharsan’s injury.
The Karnataka batter produced an excellent knock in India’s three-day warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo. Padikkal scored an unbeaten 142 from 121 balls, hitting 18 boundaries before retiring. He also shared important partnerships with KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja.
His timing could hardly have been better. India were looking for answers in the top order after Sudharsan’s fitness problems, and Padikkal gave the team something concrete to think about. He looked comfortable against both pace and spin and played his shots without taking unnecessary risks.
The century does not guarantee selection, but it has certainly put him near the front of the queue. For now, Padikkal looks like the most natural candidate to take Sudharsan’s place at No. 3, while Sarfaraz adds another experienced option to the squad.

SL vs IND: First Test Starts on August 15
The two-Test series of Sri Lanka vs India will begin at the Galle International Stadium on August 15, with the second Test scheduled at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo from August 23. Both matches are part of the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.
India had hoped to enter the series with Sudharsan available after his impressive outings for India A. Instead, they will now have to find a new No. 3 just days before the first Test.
Padikkal’s unbeaten 142 has given him a timely advantage, while Sarfaraz’s return gives the selectors another option with Test experience.
For Sudharsan, the priority is different now. His recovery has progressed well, according to the BCCI, but the board has made it clear that he will not be pushed back before he is ready.
It is an unfortunate end to what had been shaping up as an exciting opportunity for the young batter. India, meanwhile, must move on quickly. The first Test in Galle is only days away, and the decision over who replaces Sudharsan could have a big say in how the batting order takes shape.
