The stage is set, the buzz is electric, and cricket fans around the globe are on the edge of their seats as the IPL 2025 meg auction is about to begin. Teams are gearing up to bid fiercely for the biggest names in cricket and uncover hidden gems who could become tomorrow’s superstars. Mumbai Indians, known for their sharp strategies and star-studded lineups, are entering the IPL 2025 mega auction with a clear mission. They have retained 5 capped players before the IPL 2025 mega auction, but there is no wicketkeeping option in those 5 names. They will be eyeing a good wicketkeeping option whether it’s an international star or a local talent.
The franchise is expected to target a player who brings both consistency with the bat and reliability with the gloves. Today, we will see the 3 names that Mumbai Indians (MI) can target in the IPL 2025 mega auction. So let’s start.
Mumbai Indians have retained 5 capped players before the auction
Mumbai Indians have decided to go with the one RTM (Right to Match) card option in the IPL 2025 auction as they have already filled 5 slots via direct retention. They have retained 5 capped players, which means they can only use that one RTM card on an uncapped player.
Mumbai Indians has retained Jasprit Bumrah (INR 18 crore), Suryakumar Yadav (INR 16.35 crore), Hardik Pandya (INR 16.35 crore), Rohit Sharma (INR 16.30 crore), and Tilak Varma (INR 8 crore). They have spent a total of INR 75 crore and will go with INR 45 crore in their purse for the auction. While talking about the three wicketkeepers, we will consider their purse remaining.
Three wicketkeepers Mumbai Indians might target in the IPL 2025 mega auction
(1) Jos Buttler
It could be a homecoming for Jos Buttler as Mumbai Indians might target him as their wicketkeeper-batter option for the IPL 2025. Buttler started his IPL career with Mumbai Indians in 2016, before moving to Rajasthan Royals (RR), where he tasted success.
Buttler has been a phenomenal wicketkeeper batter in white-ball cricket all around the world. His wicketkeeping ability is there to see for everyone and he can bat in the top order. In the batting, we have seen him smashing the opposition bowlers left, right, and center in white-ball, especially in T20s where he used the powerplay to a good effect.
In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Jos Buttler has scored 3582 runs in 107 games with an average of 38.11 and a strike rate of 147.53. He has 19 fifties and 7 hundred to his name in the IPL. RR is unlikely to go after him full throttle as they only have INR 41 crore left in the purse. In this case, Mumbai Indians must target someone like Buttler who has loads of experience in this role.
(2) Ishan Kishan
We have seen the MI franchise values their players. They always tried hard that a player who plays for them will be a part of ‘one family’. In the last few years, Ishan Kishan has shared a good bond with this franchise and has performed decently for them as well.
Kishan could be a wicketkeeping option for Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2025, who can also bat in the top order with Rohit Sharma. The only problem MI will face is the purse remaining. They have INR 45 crore left in the kitty, and we might see some other franchises with more purse amounts go for Ishan Kishan as well. MI has to plan for this scenario and they must have made up their mind by now.
(3) Quinton de Kock
Just like Jos Buttler, there could be a homecoming for Quinton de Kock as well. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) has released the South African wicketkeeper batter. They might not go for him in the IPL 2025 mega auction. MI can go for him as de Kock has done so well for them in the past. He has tasted most of the success in the IPL with MI, winning the titles as well.
Quinton de Kock is a destructive opener and an outstanding wicketkeeper. His experience is also important at the highest level. In terms of spending money also, MI can get him in a lesser amount as compared to the other wicketkeeping options like Rishabh Pant, KL Raul, etc.
Other options for Mumbai Indians in wicketkeeping
There are a few more options in the wicketkeeping for Mumbai Indians like Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Jitesh Sharma, etc. But we don’t consider them in this list because of the purse remaining for MI. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant might go for big bucks in the IPL 2025 mega auction. MI would love love to him someone like Pant or Rahul on their team. They might also go for them in the auction, but at some stage, they will have to keep a check on their purse. Teams like RCB, PBKS, LSG, etc with more purses will also target Pant and Rahul in the auction.
As far as Jitesh Sharma, PBKS might use an RTM card for him or buy him in the auction. If this won’t happen, MI could target him as their wicketkeeping option. He can also bat in the middle order as all three wicketkeepers that we have discussed are top-order batters.
