Sunrisers Hyderabad Appoint Daniel Vettori as Head Coach for IPL 2024

Sunrisers Hyderabad has announced Daniel Vettori as the new head coach in the IPL 2024. He will replace Brian Lara, who becomes the coach of the franchise in IPL 2023. After a trophy-winning Indian Premier League 2016 under the coaching of Tom Moody, it’s the 4th head coach of the franchise (other than Tom Moody). Although the decision on the other coaching staff of the franchise will be taken later.

Horrible IPL 2023 for the Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had a very horrible season in IPL 2023. They finished at the last in the IPL 2023 points table. SRH only managed to win 4 games out of 14, which is the least number of games won by a single team in IPL 2023.

An unwanted first stint with SRH for Markram and Brian Lara

Aiden Markram led the side in the season, but his first stint as captain in IPL hasn’t gone as well as he wanted. He becomes the captain of the side after he led the same Sunrisers franchise (Sunrisers Eastern Cape) to the title win in an inaugural SA20 league.

Brian Lara, the legendary West Indian batter was the head coach of SRH in IPL 2023. It was his first year with the franchise, but it hasn’t gone well either.

Other coaching staff of SRH in IPL 2023

Along with Lara, Simon Helmot, M Muralitharan, Dale Steyn, and Hemang Badani served as Assistant Coach, Spin bowling coach, Fast bowling coach, and Fielding coach respectively in IPL 2023 for SRH.

SRH’s IPL history

SRH’s best performance came in 2016, when David Warner was the captain and Tom Moody was the head coach. They won the title by beating RCB in the final.

Other than that, they also manage to reach the final in 2018 under the captaincy of Kane Williamson but failed to cross the line in the final against CSK. Since then, SRH’s performance hasn’t been up to the mark in the tournament.

SRH banking on Daniel Vettori

Now, after a very bad IPL season, SRH are now banking on former New Zealand all-rounder, Daniel Vettori to change the fate of the team. Vettori will now be the new head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2024. He will replace Brian Lara, who came to IPL 2023 for the first time.

SRH, on their official social media handle, has announced the news. They welcomed Daniel Vettori with a tweet –

Kiwi Legend Daniel Vettori joins the #OrangeArmy as Head Coach.

Welcome, Coach!

Vettori’s coaching career

Indian Premier League IPL

Daniel Vettori came into the Indian Premier League in the role of a head coach after 5 years. He was the head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) from 2014 to 2019.

In his tenure, RCB also played the final as well in 2016. But his team lost a very close high scoring final against SRH in that season.

Vettori as Barbados Royals’s head coach

In August 2021, the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise appoint Daniel Vettori as their head coach. Although his team didn’t do well and finished last in the points table with only 3 wins in 10 games.

Vettori’s other roles

Daniel Vettori also becomes the spin bowling coach of the Bangladesh Cricket Team in July 2019.

Vettori was appointed as the head coach of the Dublin Chiefs in the first season of the Euro T20 Slam cricket tournament. Although, the tournament was cancelled later.

Right now, he is serving as the assistant and the spin bowling coach for the Australian Cricket Team. It is likely that his role will be continued till the ICC World Cup 2023, starting from October 05 in India.

Brian Lara’s say on this?

Brian Lara, the former SRH’s head coach expresses his unhappiness after his exclusion from the role. Lara also talked about the struggles with travelling during his first year with SRH as a coach.

“First of all, it’s my first year. Not getting to grips with the emotions of going through an IPL season. Especially when we were back to travelling to different venues and finding out different surfaces. Our last year was based on 3-4 venues, so there is a huge difference in that.” Brian Lara explained

Is it a good move by Sunrisers Hyderabad to appoint Vettori as head coach?

Too much changing in the coaching staff will not help the franchise. Ever since the SRH franchise came into the scene in the IPL (2013), it’s their 5th head coach. Their best performance came in IPL 2016 when Tom Moody was the head coach. Moody served SRH as head coach from 2013 to 2019.

SRH’s Previous Head Coaches

  • Tom Moody: 2013-19
  • Trevor Bayliss: 2020-2021
  • Tom Moody: 2022
  • Brian Lara: 2023

Although Daniel Vettori hasn’t won any big events as a coach, his experience of playing so much cricket will be vital for the team. He would want his team to replicate the performance of IPL 2016 in his tenure.

Conclusion

So this is the news coming in from the SRH. Let’s see if Daniel Vettori could do anything different in IPL 2024.
