Gautam Gambhir Is Set To Be Head Coach | Team India

Gautam Gambhir is likely to take the role of the next head coach of Team India

The first batch of Team India’s players have reached the US for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 as the next batch is expected to be flying soon. Rahul Dravid has also reached there with the team for his last stint. You won’t see Rahul Dravid coaching Team India after the tournament.

Gautam Gambhir, a former India player’s name has been floating in reports for the next India’s head coach. Although there is no official confirmation, but he is ahead in the race of Dravid’s successor.

The name of Gautam Gambhir took momentum after KKR’s title win

The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) is looking for a new head coach for Team India after Rahul Dravid’s tenure is over. The deadline to apply for the role has ended on Monday (May 27, 2024). A few players’ names were floating in the media like Stephen Fleming, Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer, Gautam Gambhir, VVS Laxman, etc. But a few of the players have rejected the offer, citing the demands of the job.

Now, after the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) trophy-winning campaign, Gambhir’s name took momentum as India’s next head coach. He is likely to take the role after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Although neither the BCCI nor the former cricket player have confirmed the news, a media source claims that a well-known IPL franchise owner who is close to the board has confirmed the appointment of Gautam Gambhir.

According to a report published by Cricbuzz, the coach selection circle’s motto is “desh ke liye karna hai” (we must do it for the country). With regards to this keyword and the discussion between Gautam Gambhir and Secretary, Jay Shah centered around it, both BCCI and Gambhir appear to be on the same page.

Why Gambhir’s name is floating too much?

One of the main reasons is Gambhir’s success in the coaching circuit over the last few years. He joined a newly formed Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise as a mentor in IPL 2022. He was with the franchise for two years (2022-23). In his mentorship, the team reached the playoffs in both seasons.

After that, he joined KKR as a mentor in IPL 2024, a team where he saw a lot of success as a player. And guess what, KKR won the title this year. His name took fire in the media reports after KKR’s successful title-winning campaign.

Also, BCCI’s secretary, Jay Shah has made a statement that they are looking for a coach who understands the Indian cricket structure and the Indian domestic cricket. The statement indicates the appointment of an Indian coach, rather than a foreign coach. VVS Laxman was a top contender for the role at one stage as he is an Indian. But he was reluctant to go for it, and Gautam Gambhir became an automatic choice as an Indian coaching contender.

Multiple career options for Gautam Gambhir

The former Indian cricketer has multiple career options as of now. As we have seen, he is with the KKR franchise as a mentor and also worked as a cricket expert in broadcasting and on TV channels. But if he joins Team India in a head coach role, he has to give up all those things. Gambhir has to take a call on this and he might talk to the top brass management of KKR before taking any decision. A media report suggests that the owner of the KKR franchise, Shahrukh Khan is aware of all these things.

However, after serving his time with Team India, Gambhir is free to return to Kolkata, and the team will probably welcome him back. There may be ongoing talks between Gambhir and the BCCI as no official confirmation has been done yet.

BCCI hasn’t approached any former Australian for India’s next head coach – Jay Shah

Before that, Jay Shah came in public and stated that neither he nor BCCI has approached any former Australian player for the next head coach of Team India. The statement came after Justin Langer, a former Australian cricketer said a few things on BBC’s podcast regarding Team India’s next head coach. Langer said he was approached for the role of a head coach, but when he talked to KL Rahul during the IPL 2024, Rahul said if you (to Langer) think there is pressure and politics in the IPL, multiply it by a thousand, that many pressure and politics is there in coaching Team India.

The statement took fire on social media and Jay Shah had to give a statement. A few other players like CSK’s current head coach, Stephen Fleming’s name have also been floating in media for the role of Team India’s next head coach. Other than that, Ricky Ponting, Andy Flower, VVS Laxman, and Mahela Jayawardene’s name has also been there in media reports.
