Over the years, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has gained huge popularity in stature since its inaugural edition in 2008. The action on the field has completely kept the fanbase increasing for the prestigious T20 tournament with its thrilling pace. At the same time, there are a few embarrassing moments in IPL history. As a result, several controversial moments arose and grabbed the headlines.

Though IPL has proved to be a great source of entertainment for fans globally, the tournament also became famous for numerous controversies. As a result, the rich-cash league became a black mark for affecting the tag “Gentlemen’s game” of cricket negatively.

1. Kieron Pollard Throws Bat at Mitchell Starc (IPL 2014):

During the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians, Kieron Pollard threw his bat at the Australian pacer Mitchell Starc. Before that, Pollard and Starc engaged in a heated argument. Later the Aussie fast bowler delivered a bouncer to Pollard which he had to miss during the 17th over. Starc made some unusual comments that insulted Pollard.

In the next ball, Pollard moved away from the stumps stating that he wasn’t ready when Starc started his run-up. Despite that Starc still threw towards Pollard which made him angry. In response, Pollard threw his bat aggressively towards Mitchell Starc.

Though the bat slipped off his hands and didn’t hurt anyone, it became one of the most embarrassing moments in IPL. Later, the match umpires discussed with both players and tried to bring the situation under control.

2. Virat Kohli vs Gautam Gambhir (IPL 2013):

In 2013, Gautam Gambhir was the skipper of Kolkata Knight Riders and Virat Kohli was Royal Challengers Bangalore captain. The debate between these two captains started in the 10th over. KKR’s pace bowler Laxmipathy Balaji dismissed Virat Kohli by taking a simple catch. Virat Kohli made an unusual remark to the bowler while leaving the crease. Gautam Gambhir decided to defend his bowler by engaging himself in a wild argument with Virat Kohli. Though RCB won that match, both the teams had to travel through the embarrassing moments in IPL.

3. Danny Morrison Lifts Cheerleader on His Shoulders (IPL 2008):

The New Zealand commentator Danny Morrison lifted a cheerleader on his shoulders while determining the pitch report during the pre-match analysis along with Ramiz Raza. Out of the 5 cheerleaders on the field, Danny indulged himself in the most awkward and embarrassing moments in IPL 2008 by allowing a cheerleader to sit on his shoulders.

4. Harbhajan Singh slapped Sreesanth (IPL 2008):

This is another embarrassing moment in IPL when Harbhajan Singh (Mumbai Indians) slapped Sreesanth (Kings XI Punjab) on the field. During the match, Sreesanth engaged himself in sledging Mumbai Indians. After dismissing Harbhajan Singh, Sreesanth aggressively sent off the Mumbai Indians captain of that specific match.

Once the match concluded and Kings XI Punjab secured a victory, Sreesanth was spotted crying on the field after Harbhajan slapped him.

The BCCI found Harbhajan Singh guilty of the incident. Additionally, he had to undergo a ban for the remaining IPL matches as well as 5 ODIs.

5. Spot Fixing by Rajasthan Royals players (IPL 2013):

The spot-fixing incident by the three Rajasthan Royals players will always remain one of the darkest and most embarrassing moments in IPL history. The Indian police arrested Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila, and Ankeet Chavan for involving themselves in spot-fixing during IPL 2013.

BCCI banned Sreesanth from all cricket formats for 7 years. Though the Patiala High Court forgave these three cricketers for their crime, they couldn’t return to the next editions of IPL. 

6. Lady offering apples to umpire ( IPL 2017): 

During the match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and former team Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS), a beautiful woman made fun of the umpires. She offered apples rather than cricket balls.

The umpire took an apple and gave it back by signalling it as wrong and repeated the same action with the next apple. It was the third time the umpire was offered the ball. It was a funny incident for spectators at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Still, a few people considered it the most embarrassing moment in IPL and an unhealthy sign in the T20 tournament.

7. Virat Kohli vs Gautam Gambhir (IPL 2023):

After 10 years, once again the clash of Virat Kohli vs Gautam Gambhir forced the match officials to impose a fine of 100% of their match fee.

Naveen-ul-Haq, an Afghan bowler from the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) team spilled out some heated words with Virat Kohli after the match concluded. Furthermore, Naveen forcefully grabbed Kohli’s hands and the RCB’s all-rounder Glenn Maxwell intervened to separate those two debaters. 

The LSG’s mentor Gautam Gambhir joined Naveen and both had a heated debate along with Virat Kohli. However, Naveen had to pay 50% of his match fee as a fine.

8. MS Dhoni vs Umpires (IPL 2019):

This is one of the rare instances when MS Dhoni, popularly known as “Captain Cool” lost his calmness and was involved in an argument with umpires. During the match between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2019, the yellow army required 18 runs off the final over to win the game.

In the 4th ball off the final over, Ben Stokes bowled a high full toss delivery to Mitchell Santner. Initially, the umpire Ulhas Gandhe signalled for a no-ball. Later he changed his decision after consulting the square leg umpire Bruce Oxenford.

CSK skipper MS Dhoni was sitting in the dugout area during that time. The incident pushed him to lose his temperament. He walked onto the field directly and engaged in a heated debate with the umpires. MS Dhoni shocked his fans by behaving aggressively on-field.  Later, the match officials posed a 50% fine to Dhoni’s match fee for breaching the IPL’s code of conduct. 

9. Danny Morrison lifts Karishma Kotak (IPL 2013):

Although the former New Zealand cricketer Danny Morrison is known for his humorous way of performing as a commentator, he tends to behave abnormally with lady presenters. While performing a live commentary Danny took the British Indian model and match presenter Karishma Kotak on his lap. He wanted to teach her how to dance and showed a couple of moves.

Though Karishma didn’t show any sign of discomfort, many girls could feel uncomfortable in such helpless moments. This is one of the worst embarrassing moments by Danny and his behaviour towards ladies in the Indian Premier League.

Although there are several ways to entertain fans, a commentator should know their limits in public areas.

10. World’s largest stadium using Sponge to dry outfield (IPL 2023):

BCCI faced severe embarrassment from fans during the IPL 2023 finals as the World’s largest stadium used a sponge to soak water and dry the outfield. Severe rains halted the final match between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans at Narendra Modi Stadium, even on the reserve day. Despite the rain stopped, the ground staff struggled a lot and had to use unconventional techniques to dry out the surface.
