The IPL 2025 mega auction is likely to happen at the end of November 2024. All the franchises have a deadline of October 31, 2024, to decide their retention list. The BCCI has already announced the retention rules for the IPL 2025 and the franchise has started to strategize the mega auction, considering all the rules and regulations. Let us first see what are the retention rules.
BCCI announced new IPL retention rules
The BCCI has allowed a total of 6 retentions to the franchises before the IPL 2025 mega auction. It also includes the RTM card option and there is no limit on using the RTM card. The franchises can retain all 6 players via outright retention or use all 6 RTM cards if they don’t retain any player or a combination of both.
As far as capped players, the franchises can retain a maximum of 5 capped players and a maximum of 2 uncapped players. There is no limit on retaining the player based on their nationality. The franchise can retain all 6 Indian players or all 6 overseas players or a combination of both.
It all comes down to how much the franchises want to spend on player retention. There is a cap on retained players’ salaries. The first three retained players will receive an amount of INR 18, 14, and 11 crore respectively. If the team wanted to retain 4th and 5th players as well, they would have to again spend INR 18 and 14 crore respectively. The uncapped retained player will receive an amount of 4 crore INR.
With almost 80 crore amount to be spent for 6 outright retentions, the teams will have to plan out well because the purse for the franchises in the IPL 2025 mega auction is INR 120 crore. The mega auction will be interesting to see with some dramatic players’ bidding, a spotlight on uncapped players, new team dynamics, and strategic decisions by the teams.
Where will the IPL 2025 Mega Auction happen?
Over the years, we have seen the IPL auctions happening in India in different cities. The recent edition happened in Dubai as well due to the pandemic and logistical conveniences. For the IPL 2025 mega auction, the BCCI is now investigating Saudi Arabia as a venue to host the event. This possible action is part of a larger plan to raise cricket’s popularity internationally. It also increases its influence in the Middle East.
Although Riyadh and Jeddah have become the preferred locations, Dubai, the former host, is no longer in the lead. Moving out of Dubai is not a totally unexpected decision. Despite the logistical difficulties and increased expenses involved in holding an event of this kind in the nation, reports suggest that the BCCI is eager to investigate new venues in Saudi Arabia, even if Dubai is still a handy and well-known destination.
Saudi Arabia – A hub for global sporting events
Saudi Arabia is rapidly becoming a hub for global sporting events, positioning itself as a key player in the international sports landscape. With significant investments in various sports, including football, golf, boxing, Formula 1, and now even cricket, the country is attracting top athletes and major tournaments. This strategic focus on sports is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader vision to diversify its economy and increase its presence on the global stage.
Finding an adequate lodging and venue for the event—which consists of broadcasters like Jio and Disney Star in addition to ten team delegations—has proven to be difficult, though.
The reasons behind London not making the cut
It’s also interesting to note that organizers first considered London as a possible location for the auction. But, the BCCI ruled it out due to November’s frigid temperatures.
Auction Format and What to Expect
The IPL 2025 Mega Auction will happen in a 2-day format like the last time. It will give the franchises enough time to strategize and plan the event. They will look to build a strong team that will serve them for the next few seasons. The BCCI’s decision to host the event in Saudi Arabia makes it more interesting.
