Today, we will talk about the points that BCCI discussed in the meeting and what are the demands of different franchises. We will also give you updates on what are the possible changes BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) can make before the IPL 2025 auction. So let’s dive into it quickly.
BCCI & IPL owners to discuss the changes in IPL 2025 rules | IPL Meeting
IPL 2025 is still 8-9 months away to start, but we might see a whole new season of the tournament with a few changes in the rules. The BCCI had a meeting with the IPL franchise owners on July 31 in Mumbai.
One of the main agenda in the meeting was the number of player retentions allowed to the franchises before IPL 2025. Some of the other major points were to have a mega auction or not, continuing the impact player rule, cap on overseas players or Indian players, etc.
No real outcome from the meeting between IPL Owners & BCCI
Although the franchise owners and the BCCI met for a discussion, there was no real outcome from the meeting. The BCCI took all the feedback and now discusses those points with the IPL governing council and then takes a decision. We might get to know the new IPL 2025 rules at the end of August.
Now let’s see what franchises have to say on different points in that meeting.
No. of retentions – Big Debate Between IPL Owners | Some franchise wants more retentions, and some want less
One of the main agenda of the IPL meeting between BCCI & IPL owners relies on allowing the number of player retention to the franchises. Some franchises want more and more retention like 6 or 8 or even 10 so that they can keep their core group of players with themselves. There one of the major points is how they build the team over the years, and now if the retentions are less, they might lose the team that gives them results.
On the other hand, some franchises don’t want an increase in retention. They think that it will make the tournament more interesting and allow an even playing field.
The franchises like KKR and SRH are in favor of more retention while teams like PBKS and DC are in favor of less retention.
⏩ Shah Rukh Khan engages in a heated argument with PBKS co-owner
Shah Rukh Khan of the Kolkata Knight Riders is among the IPL owners who have reportedly contacted the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to oppose holding a mega auction, according to a report published by Cricbuzz. According to the same report, Ness Wadia, a co-owner of Punjab Kings (PBKS) and SRK, got into a heated argument about it. The Punjab-based team is opposed to the KKR owner’s desire for the team to be able to retain a large number of players.
Things escalated so much that the BCCI secretary, Jay Shah had to give a statement, saying ‘an organized dialogue took place between the owners.
What about the IPL mega-auction? Who is in favor and against it?
Same as the player retention rule. Some franchises like DC and PBKS are in favor of mega auctions. They even think mega auctions should happen in every three years rather than every five years. On the other hand, KKR and SRH owners don’t want the mega auction at all. Although there is no one from the RCB camp, they might also be in favor of a mega auction so that they can build a new team.
Parth Jindal, DC’s owner said – “Some people said that there should not be a mega auction at all. There should be only smaller auctions.”
Difference of opinion on the impact of player rule
A lot of talk was about whether the BCCI keeps the impact player rule or not. There are a difference of opinion on this point as well. DC owner expressed his opinion and said he is not in favor of the impact player rule. While some franchises think it’s good and makes IPL more interesting.
Another thing to look at is the broadcaster’s point of view. They are in favor of the impact player rule. During and after the IPL, some of the big players like Rohit Sharma, Axar Patel, M Siraj, etc are not in favor of this rule. They think that it gives an extra advantage to the bowlers and hampers the growth of all-rounders in Indian cricket.
Kavya Maran on players’ cap and banning the players
SRH’s CEO Kavya Maran suggested that no cap on the number of overseas and capped or uncapped Indian players. She also has strong views on those players who opted out of the tournament after getting picked in the auction. According to her, the player should be banned if he opts out of the tournament for whatever reasons other than the injury. We have seen so many instances where a player opts out of the tournament for personal reasons after the auction.
Other changes like an increase in purses and separate slots for uncapped players
It is almost decided that the increase in the purse of the franchise will happen. One of the other agendas in the meeting was separate slots for retaining uncapped players and RTM (Right to Match). More developments will come after BCCI meets with the IPL governing council.
Conclusion
So these are a few developments coming from the meeting yesterday. Let’s see how things panned out. We might see the results in the latter half of August.
