The BCCI has invited applications for the role of Team India’s next head coach. Today, we will talk about the top contenders for the next head coach of Team India.

A few names are circulating on social media and a few reports have also suggested the same. Let’s see those names one by one.

Top contenders for the next head coach of Team India

(1) Stephen Fleming

A former NZ cricketer and a current coach of CSK is one of the top contenders for the next head coach of Team India. However, he has been reluctant to apply for the role due to the demands of the job. The BCCI has turned to MS Dhoni to convince Fleming to go for this role as both have worked together for CSK for so many years.

Fleming’s coaching career and achievements

A former Kiwi took the role of head coach of CSK in 2009. Since then, CSK has won 5 IPL titles (in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023).

When CSK got banned for two years in 2016-17, he became the coach of a newly formed franchise Rising Pune Super Giants. Fleming has also coached the other Super Kings franchise in SA20 for Joburg Super Kings and in the Major Cricket League for Texas Super Kings.

He also had a coaching stint with Melbourne Stars from 2015 to 2019.

(2) Mahela Jayawardene

A former Sri Lankan star could be an option for India’s Men’s Cricket Team’s head coach. He has been in the Mumbai Indians setup since 2017. In 2022, he will become the global head of performance for the entire MI franchise, which also includes the MI Emirates and MI Cape Town in ILT20 and SA20 respectively.

(3) Gautam Gambhir

Probably the front-runner when it comes to the Indian coach. However, he is yet to apply for the role as he is waiting for the IPL 2024 final. He is a mentor of KKR in IPL 2024.

Gambhir’s coaching career

Gautam Gambhir joined Lucknow Super Giants as a mentor in 2022. He continued his role of mentorship for LSG in 2023 as well. In those two years, LSG reached the playoffs of the IPL.

Now, he came into the KKR setup as mentor in IPL 2024 and his team has finished at the top of the points table. They are in the final of the tournament as well after beating SRH in Qualifier 1. Let’s see if Gambhir can come as India’s next head coach or not. He will decide after talking to the KKR’s top brass after the IPL 2024 final.

(4) Justin Langer

Another contender for the head coach role of Team India after Rahul Dravid. Other than his playing days, Langer has also tasted success as a coach. Although, currently he is a head coach of LSG in IPL 2024 and his team wasn’t able to reach the playoffs. But he is very much experienced in the coaching circuit.

Langer’s coaching career

The contract was ended after the 2015-16 season. In 2016, he served as an interim coach for the Australian team when the then-coach Darren Lehman took leave.

Lange took the reins of Australia’s men’s team coaching in May 2018 after the infamous Sandpaper Gate scandal. Australia played the semifinal of ODI WC 2019 in his tenure. Andrew McDonald took that role from Langer in October 2019.

Then, again Langer took the role of Australia’s coach and the tenure was a good one for him. In that period, Australia retained the Ashes in England and won the T20 WC 2021 as well.

(5) VVS Laxman

VVS Laxman is currently working as NCA Head. He was approached for the head coach role of Team India after the ODI WC 2023, but after his refusal, Dravid’s tenure was extended till T20 WC 2024. Now, he could be one of the contenders for this role as well.

Ponting and Flower already refused for the role

A few reports are suggesting that the BCCI approached Ricky Ponting and Andy Flower for the head coach role. But both have refused for the same already.

Harbhajan interested in India’s head coach role

Harbhajan Singh, in an interview with ANI, said he is interested in coaching India’s men’s cricket team. Although Harbhajan said he hasn’t decided to apply for the post or not, but is very enthusiastic if the opportunity comes.
