Shreyas Iyer Suffers With Serious Injury! Shifted to ICU After Internal Bleeding

India’s new ODI vice-captain, Shreyas Iyer, is currently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Sydney due to severe internal bleeding. He suffered a terrible rib cage injury during the third ODI match against Australia played at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday (October 25).

Iyer hurt his left rib cage after he took a stunning catch running backwards to dismiss the Australian batter Alex Carey. Although he succeeded with his attempt, but was spotted in huge discomfort, and the physios assisted in carrying him off the field immediately.

At one stage, the incident seemed to be a life-threatening situation, which prompted the medical team to rush the middle order batter immediately to a hospital.

Let’s take a look at the three-day timeline starting from Iyer’s injury to understand his current fitness status and how long his recovery might take.

Updated Timeline of Shreyas Iyer’s Injury (From 25th to 27th October)

Initially, the catch from an outsider’s point of view seemed to be normal. But, the on-field players stated that Iyer suffered from unbearable pain and discomfort while returning to the dressing room:

October 25 (Saturday)

The medical team of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) observed a high level of fluctuations in his neurological parameters.

Mainly, the 30-year-old was instantly rushed to the hospital to prevent excessive internal bleeding.

Furthermore, the medical reports revealed the uncontrollable internal bleeding, which prompted the doctors to admit him to the ICU.

October 26 (Sunday)

Iyer continued to be closely monitored in the ICU to determine his body condition.

October 27 (Monday)

Even though Iyer’s condition has slightly improved, it is expected that he might remain admitted in the ICU for another two more days if his bleeding isn’t controlled.

The scan reports revealed that Shreyas suffered a laceration injury to his spleen. Suppose there are no signs of improvement, then he should be hospitalized for another week under close observation.

Here is what the BCCI official said about Iyer’s current fitness levels:

“YES! Shreyas Iyer suffered a ruptured injury to his lower rib cage while fielding in the 3rd ODI match against Australia. The scans revealed an injury to his spleen.

He is mentally stable and is undergoing treatment. Although he showed few signs of recovery, the BCCI medical team will consult the specialist team in Sydney and India to monitor his injury status.

Also, the Indian team doctors have made arrangements to stay in Sydney to observe Shreyas’s progress on a day-to-day basis,” the BCCI official said.

Has Shreyas Iyer’s Family Arrived in Sydney?

BCCI is trying its level best to ensure that any member of Shreyas Iyer’s family can be in Sydney during his treatment. However, there is no confirmation of his family’s arrival in Australia.

The BCCI’s closest source confirmed that the paperwork has been done and cited that someone could arrive as soon as possible:

“No! Right now, there are no updates on whether both parents will travel, but someone is expected to be nearest him at the earliest during such tough situations.

As the paperwork has been moved forward, Iyer’s sister was supposed to arrive in Sydney. Perhaps, one of the parents might accompany her during the journey,” the BCCI source said.

How Severe is Shreyas Iyer’s Injury?

As Shreyas Iyer sustained a spleen laceration, it caused a huge level of internal bleeding. To explain in simple words, a spleen is a delicate structure located on the left side of the ribs, and rupture poses significant risks, often requiring complicated surgery.

Heavy fall on the left side or a direct hit to the ribs causes severe internal damage, leading to tearing and bleeding inside the body.

Iyer’s Estimated Recovery Period from Rib Cage Injury

So, it is understood that Shreyas Iyer needs to be rested for at least six to twelve weeks. He is likely to miss three months of cricket, which includes the ODI series against South Africa and New Zealand in November 2025 and January 2026, respectively.

Also, doctors have strictly warned him to avoid any physical contact, impact, or any activities that cause strain to his body. There are chances for the injury to reopen and start bleeding again if the same affected area is hit.

As of now, the scan reports revealed that Iyer’s spleen has healed, and there is no chance of bleeding. But, he needs to ensure commencing his physical training gently only after undergoing complete bed rest for a few weeks.

Overall Opinion

Shreyas Iyer is mandated to undergo treatment in Sydney for a few more days to ensure that his bleeding is completely halted. Even though his condition improves, but requires rest and close observation.

However, the good news is that the spleen injury won’t cause any long-term problems. So, Iyer is expected to recover soon, but needs to be highly cautious not to take risky catches or dive on his left side to ensure long-term continuity to his cricket career.
