Ranking IPL Teams Based On Final Squads | IPL 2024

IPL 2024 Auction: Top 10 Teams rankings from CSK to RR based on final squads

Two Australian players grabbed big paychecks that influenced the rankings of all 10 different teams based on the final squads formed after the IPL 2024 auction.

A huge number of 333 players went under the hammer to fill the 77 slots during the IPL 2024 auction, which was grandly held at Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai on 19th December 2023. However, a total of 72 spots were filled which includes 30 overseas players as well.

All the 10 franchises together spent a whopping total of INR 230.45 crores. It includes the two most expensive players in the IPL history.

The IPL 2024 auction began with Rovman Powell striking a deal with Rajasthan Royals for INR 7.4 crores. Later, the World Cup 2023 star performers found their best IPL teams which include Rachin Ravindra, Daryll Mitchell, Pat Cummins, Travis Head, Mitchell Starc, Gerald Coetzee, and many more…

While Mitchell Starc became the costliest player in the IPL auction history, Sameer Rizvi became the most expensive uncapped player in IPL 2024.

Many big names like Steve Smith, Josh Inglis, Josh Hazlewood, and Adil Rashid went unsold during the auction.

As a result, the IPL 2024 teams rankings starting from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to Rajasthan Royals(RR) have been classified based on their strategic performance in the mini-auction.

IPL 2024 Auction: Teams rankings after the auction: Based on the conclusive squads

Classifying the 10 different teams’ rankings after the IPL 2024 auction in ascending order comprehends well with all cricket fans:

1. Chennai Super Kings (CSK):

The Chennai Super Kings led by MS Dhoni needed an overseas all-rounder. Finally, the franchise acquired New Zealand’s Daryll Mitchell (INR 14 crores) and Rachin Ravindra ( INR 1.8 crores).

Instead of finding an experienced player to replace Ambati Rayudu in IPL 2024, CSK opted for the uncapped player- Sameer Rizvi ( INR 8.40 crores).

To bolster the bowling attack at the death overs, CSK acquired Shardul Thakur (INR 4 crores)  and Mustafizur Rahman (INR 2 crores).

Ultimately, CSK tops the list of IPL 2024 teams rankings by acquiring quality players at a bargained price.

2. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH):

Pat Cummins (INR 20.50) became the best pick for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024 auction to adjust the loopholes in the bowling department. Perhaps, the World Cup-winning skipper could become the future captain of SRH by replacing Aiden Markram. Thereby, he became the 2nd most expensive player in the IPL 2024 auction. Also, Cummins is the 2nd costliest player in the Indian Premier League IPL history.

Based on the World Cup 2023 finals knock, Travis Head ( INR 6.8 crores) was acquired more than his base price to strengthen the batting unit.

Sunrisers grabbed Wanindu Hasaranga ( INR 1.50 crores) to enhance the all-rounder department as well as strengthen the spin bowling unit along with Washington Sundar in IPL 2024.

3. Gujarat Titans (GT):

To compensate for the trade of Hardik Pandya, Gujarat Titans managed with a couple of good purchases like Shah Rukh Khan (INR 7.4 crores) and Spencer Johnson (INR 10 crores).

Moreover, the entire squad will play under Shubman Gill, who is set to mark his captaincy debut in IPL 2024.

Finally, GT ranks 3rd position in the list of IPL 2024 teams rankings by retaining their bowling strengths Mohammed Shami and Rashid Khan.

4. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG):

Trading Devdutt Padikkal from Rajasthan Royals for INR 7.75 crores, solved the problem for Lucknow Super Giants opening combination in IPL 2024.

Possibly, the LSG skipper KL Rahul might play as a middle-order batsman in the forthcoming season.

A decent bowling lineup including good pacers and considerable spinners can restrict the opponent team to an average score.

Overall, the worthy batting and bowling lineup holds LSG in the 4th position among other teams ranking in the list after the IPL 2024 auction.

5. Kolkata Knight Riders ( KKR):

Mitchell Starc ( INR 24.75 crores) grabbed the most expensive package in IPL history from Kolkata Knight Riders(KKR) during the IPL 2024 auction.

Additionally, KKR integrated a brilliant move to include Mujeeb Ur Rahman ( INR 2 crores) and Chetan Sakariya ( INR 50 lakhs).

However, the batting performance of KKR in IPL 2024 heavily depends upon their best top and middle-order batsmen such as:

  • Top order:  Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Jason Roy
  • Middle order: Nitish Rana and Shreyas Iyer
  • Finishing batsman: Andre Russell

Moreover, an Indian finisher is required for KKR in IPL 2024 to assist Andre Russell in the death overs.

Eventually, the lack of batting depth places KKR in the 5th position between the list of IPL 2024 team rankings, categorized according to their squads after the mini-auction.

6. Mumbai Indians (MI):

Hardik Pandya’s trade from Gujarat Titans for INR 15 crores bolstered Mumbai Indians‘ chances to win their 6th IPL title.

To compensate for Jofra Archer’s absence in IPL 2024, Mumbai Indians opted for three overseas bowlers at the most expensive price namely:

  • Gerald Coetzee ( INR 5 crores)
  • Nuwan Thushara (INR 4.8 crores)
  • Dilshan Madushanka ( INR 4.6 crores)

Despite acquiring Afghanistan’s all-rounder Mohammad Nabi (INR 1.5 crores), the spin bowling unit lacks perfect depth. Only Piyush Chawla is an experienced spin bowler for Mumbai Indians.

7. Punjab Kings (PBKS):

Harshal Patel (INR 11.75 crores)  became the 4th expensive player in the IPL 2024 auction by joining Punjab Kings.

Additionally, PBKS made a lucrative investment in Rilee Russouw ( INR 2 crores) and Chris Woakes( INR 4.2 crores).

However, the franchise had to depend a lot on overseas players. Moreover, the PBKS wasn’t successful in finding an ideal replacement for Shah Rukh Khan.

The lack of Indian talent haunts Punjab Kings which holds the 7th position in the list of IPL 2024 team rankings after the mini-auction.

8. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB):

To bridge the gap in the bowling lineup, Royal Challengers Bangalore strengthened the pace line-up by including these players to Assist Mohammad Siraj and Reece Topley:

  • Alzarri Joseph ( INR 11.50 crores)
  • Yash Dayal ( INR 5 crores)
  • Lockie Ferguson ( INR 2 crores)
  • Tom Curran ( INR 1.5 crores)

However, RCB dug up another hole while trying to plug a hole in the bowling unit. After releasing Wanindu Hasaranga, the franchise was unable to find another top spinner ahead of IPL 2024 to match his skills.

9. Delhi Capitals (DC):

The batting order for Delhi Capitals heavily depends upon the Australian batsmen like David Warner and Mitchell Marsh.

Importantly, the DC failed to focus on including an opening pair back-up to Prithvi Shaw in the IPL 2024 auction.

Finally, the franchise focussed on buying wicket-keepers who could prove to be an exact back-up for Rishabh Pant.

Also, the core bowlers Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi dealing with constant injuries place Delhi Capitals at the 9th position among the IPL 2024 teams rankings, based on their performance in the auction.

10. Rajasthan Royals (RR):

After spending more than 90% of their purse value on these two cricketers-  Rovman Powell ( INR 7.40 crores) and Shubham Pandey ( INR 5.80 crores), there wasn’t any option left for Rajasthan Royals to remain with a little purse value in the IPL 2024 auction.

Consequently, RR couldn’t make valuable purchases to secure the services of Indian or overseas all-rounders.

Also, with a total number of 22 members included Rajasthan Royals becomes the smallest compared to the other teams in IPL 2024.

Conclusively, IPL 2024 would be the most challenging season for Rajasthan Royals without the inclusion of any quality players in the squad.
