Mumbai Indians wins a thriller after Bumrah, Coetzee runs through PBKS top order

Mumbai Indians (MI) jumps to No. 7 in the IPL 2024 points table with a win against Punjab Kings (PBKS). Suryakumar Yadav’s 78 and Jasprit Bumrah, Gerald Coetzee’s bowling effort helped MI to register their 3rd win in a thrilling contest. It’s the 4th loss in the last over for PBKS in this season. Ashutosh Sharma and Shashank Singh again tried hard in a run chase, but PBKS fell 9 runs short of a target. We will talk about this encounter in detail. So let’s dive into it quickly.

Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav sets the tone for Mumbai Indians

After winning the toss, PBKS elected to field first. KG Rabada draws the first blood for the team by taking a wicket of Ishan Kishan.

Suryakumar Yadav joined Rohit Sharma at the crease and the pair started to take the game forward for MI. The pair added 81 runs for the 2nd wicket before Sam Curran broke the partnership. Curran took the wicket of Rohit Sharma, who scored 36 runs off 25 balls.

Tilak Varma joined Surya at the crease and they also added 49 runs for the 3rd wicket. Suryakumar Yadav got out in the 17th over to Sam Curran by scoring 78 runs off 53 balls.

MI reach 192 with the help of Tilak’s cameo

Tilak Varma played an important cameo of 34 runs off 18 balls and a few hits from Tim David helped MI reach 192. At one stage, they were looking good for even more. But they still had an above-par score on the board.

Bumrah and Coetzee runs through Punjab’s top order

When PBKS came out to chase a target, they came against a new ball pair of Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee. Both the bowlers didn’t run through the Punjab’s top order. At one stage, PBKS were 14 for 4 with Bumrah and Coetzee taking two wickets each.

Shashank and Ashutosh again stand tall but fall short in the end

The two uncapped Indian players, Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma again show their worth in the team. They have been doing well for the team consistently in crunch situations. Shashank scored 41 runs off 25 balls. Ashutosh took the game deep, along with Harpreet Brar. But PBKS fell short by 9 runs of MI’s target.

The game regularly turns in both the teams’ favor at different stages. Even when only one wicket was left for PBKS, KG Rabada came in and hit the first ball for a six. There was excitement in the game as we know Rabada can also bat well. But eventually, he got run out in the last over and Mumbai Indians won the game.

Do Mumbai Indians make it to the top 4?

As we saw over the years, you can never discard Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League IPL. They have done it in the past as well. Reaching the top 4 after coming from behind. They are a very professional franchise. The only problem they are facing is backlash from the fans regarding the captaincy switch from Rohit Sharma to Hardik Pandya. Pandya does look under pressure and finds a way to get out of it. Maybe if MI gets a few more wins under their belt, things will start getting normal. Right now, they are standing at No. 7 in the points table with 3 wins in 7 games.

Ashutosh and Shashank, the only positives from Punjab Kings till now

PBKS also looking for a stable team combination as some of the big names like Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, and Sam Curran are not firing as per their reputation. Their regular skipper, Shikhar Dhawan has also missed a few games this season.

The only positives PBKS can take are consistent performances of Ashutosh Sharma and Shashank Sharma. Both the batters are playing fearless cricket and won a game for the team as well. In other games as well, they performed well but unfortunately didn’t get the team over the line. PBKS found themselves at No. 9 in the IPL 2024 points table with only 2 wins in 7 games.
