The Indian cricket team has ended an 11-year draught of winning an ICC tournament. They have won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 after beating South Africa in the final. After the match, three legends of Indian cricket; Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirements from T20Is. Jay Shah, the BCCI’s secretary, has confirmed that the ‘senior players’ will be there in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. After Team India’s emphatic World Cup winning campaign, all three legends of the game have decided to relinquish the shortest format of the game in international cricket. Firstly, Virat Kohli came to the post-match presentation to collect his Man of the Match award in the final and announced his T20I retirement. Then, Rohit Sharma announced his T20I retirement in the press conference after the match.

After a while, an all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja announced his T20I retirement via Instagram. All three have played so much for Team India in this format and served a lot over the years, winning matches for the team. The Indian team will miss the services of all three in T20Is.

The BCCI secretary, Jay Shah confirms the inclusion of ‘senior players’ in the upcoming ODI and Test assignments. This indicates that assuming they remain fit, the senior players should be ready for India’s nine One-Day International matches before the Champions Trophy 2025.

By saying ‘senior players’, Jay Shah is talking about Rohit, Virat, and Jadeja, who retired from T20Is. He wanted Team India to win the Champions Trophy and World Test Championship (WTC) as well.

“The way this team is progressing, our target is to win the World Test Championship final and Champions Trophy. There will be a similar squad playing there. The seniors will be there.” – Jay Shah on availability of senior players going forward.

Jay Shah praised the Indian team and Rohit Sharma

Jay Shah also talked about crossing the line and winning an ICC title. While referring to last year’s ODI WC final loss, he said the team has worked hard to go one step further. He also praised Rohit Sharma and the other two for their efforts.

“We won all games (ODI World Cup) except the final in 2023 as Australia played better. This time we worked even harder and played better to win the title. If you look at other teams, experience counts. From Rohit to Virat, all excelled. Experience makes a lot of difference, in World Cups, you can’t experiment much also.” – Shah said.

“A good player knows when to say goodbye to the game, we saw that yesterday. If you look at Rohit’s strike rate, it is better than a lot of young players. – Shah on players retiring from T20Is.

While talking about the bench strength in Indian cricket, he said we can three teams if the need arises. We have seen so many good players coming in Indian cricket from domestic cricket and IPL. The squad for this series is full of youngsters and no established player is going on the Zimbabwe tour.

It will be interesting to see who will get the nod. For the Zimbabwe tour, VVS Laxman is going with the young team as head coach.
