IPL 2025: Harry Brook Withdraws For The 2nd Time! Likely To Face A 2-Year Ban From The Tournament

Before the commencement of the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), England batter Harry Brook is likely to face a ban as he has withdrawn himself from the tournament for the second consecutive time.

The 26-year-old was signed in by the Delhi Capitals (DC) for INR 6.25 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction. In the previous season, he opted out citing the reasons for his grandmother’s demise. This year, the right-handed batter explained that he wanted to focus on England’s upcoming series, which could be the main reason for his decision.

However, Brook has risked his IPL career, as his withdrawal could result in a two-year ban from the forthcoming IPL editions, according to the latest rules developed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Harry Brook opens up on his decision to pull out of IPL 2025

Harry Brook gave an emotional statement on social media, seeking an apology to the DC franchise and supporters:

“Yeah! It was one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made to pull out of the forthcoming IPL season. I am aware that not everyone could understand the reason behind it and I won’t expect them to do so. But, I believe that I had to do what was right. Representing my country is my prime priority and focus.

Moreover, I sincerely offer my apology to the Delhi Capitals supporters and management. Based on the guidance of the people I trusted the most, I had to take sufficient time to seriously consider my decision.

This is one such crucial moment for English cricket. I want to dedicate my full commitment to preparing for the upcoming series. To perform my roles, I require some time to rejuvenate after the most active period of my career so far,” Brook said.

England aims for a fresh start to win the one-off test against Zimbabwe from May 22 (Thursday) to May 25 (Sunday), before they host West Indies for the white ball fixtures which include three ODIs and T20Is each.

Reasons for Brook’s Withdrawal from IPL 2025 Season

Even though Harry Brook didn’t reveal the actual reason for withdrawing from IPL 2025, several reports suggested these three possible reasons:

  1. Workload factor: As Brook is an all-format player, he needs to preserve his best form and prioritize the senior national cricket team’s duty over IPL.
  2. England’s captaincy vision: Harry served as Jos Buttler’s deputy of the England squad that faced an early elimination from the Champions Trophy 2025 after losing all three group-stage matches.

Following a disastrous campaign, Buttler stepped down from the captaincy role and Brook currently promises to be the frontrunner to replace him. With 18 months remaining on his central contract, Harry aims to strengthen his spot as the core player of the squad.
  3. Personal reasons: Possibly, Brook might have withdrawn due to personal reasons, as he opted out of IPL 2024 following his grandmother’s death.

Harry Brook’s Official Communication About His IPL 2025 Withdrawal

Based on the information provided by ESPNCricinfo, Brook communicated in advance with the BCCI and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) the previous week about his decision. After the discussion, the news was conveyed to Delhi Capitals and the franchise is currently searching for a replacement before the tournament starts.

Harry Brook’s IPL Career Stats and Previous Absence in Tournament

Harry Brook marked his IPL debut in 2023 representing Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and the following are his batting stats listed out of 11 matches played:

  • Innings Played: 11
  • Runs Scored: 190
  • Balls Faced: 154
  • Not Outs: 2
  • Highest Score: *100 runs out of 55 balls (including 12 fours and 3 sixes) vs Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
  • Average: 21.11
  • Strike Rate: 123.37
  • Centuries: 1
  • Fifties: 0
  • Number of 4s: 23
  • Number of 6s: 4

After SRH released Brook, DC acquired him in the IPL 2024 auction for INR 4 crores but withdrew before the season citing personal reasons.

What is a Two-year Ban Rule in IPL?

According to the new rule introduced by the BCCI and implemented by the IPL’s governing body, overseas players (especially from England) are certain to face a two-year ban for committing the repeated offense of last-minute withdrawals.

This rule introduced ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction ensures that franchises don’t get stuck searching for replacements under pressure.

However, there are exceptions to the two-year ban is applicable only for injury or medical conditions. Also, the player’s cricketing nation’s board must provide an official confirmation.

It is understood that Brook’s pullout doesn’t come under the above-mentioned category, which makes his participation doubtful in the IPL 2026 and 2027 editions each.

Challenges for Delhi Capitals After Brook’s Unexpected Exit

As Delhi Capitals starts their IPL 2025 campaign facing the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on March 24 (Monday), Brook’s withdrawal adds another challenge to the franchise:

  • Finding an Ideal Replacement: DC must search for an alternative batter to fill the void left by Brook. It is expected that any of these unsold players might be targeted to replace the English batter for the upcoming season:

    • David Warner
    • Dewald Brevis
    • Sikandar Raza
    • Daryl Mitchell
    • Ben Duckett
  • Captain Not Confirmed: DC is the only team that hasn’t revealed the captain for IPL 2025. Finally, the management will need to find a batter who can lead the squad with excellent leadership skills.
