Mumbai Indians (MI) has been one of the most successful franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history. They have won 5 titles till now (in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020), all in Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. But they failed to live as per the fans’ expectations in the last three seasons.
Mumbai Indians will look for some changes in the IPL 2024. They might release some players as well before the IPL 2024 auction. Today, we will see the three names which MI might release before the auction. So let’s start.
3 Players Mumbai Indians might release before the IPL 2024 auction
(1) Jofra Archer
Jofra Archer has missed so much cricket in the last two years or so due to injury. Mumbai Indians bought Jofra Archer in the IPL 2022 auction for INR 8 crore despite knowing that he will not be available for the season.
Jofra Archer becomes one of the best bowlers in world cricket as soon as he started playing, either in BBL or international cricket. That’s why Mumbai Indians invested in him, hoping that he will come for IPL 2023.
Archer struggles with an injury during IPL 2023
Jofra Archer has been struggling with the injury during IPL 2023. He also underwent minor surgery during the tournament in Belgium. We get to know about this news very late.
In IPL 2023, he only played 5 games and took 2 wickets at an average of 95 and a strike rate of 60. His is very expensive as well in terms of economy rate. His economy rate during the IPL 2023 was 9.50.
Jofra Archer’s IPL career:-
He started his IPL career in 2018 with Rajasthan Royals (RR). He played for RR for three years (2018-2020) and has done excellently for the team consistently.
Archer missed the IPL 2021 and 2022 due to injury. And hasn’t played much in IPL 2023.
Overall, he has played 40 games and took 48 wickets at an average of 24.40 and a strike rate of 19.69. His best figures in the tournament are 3 for 15.
MI could released him ahead of IPL 2024
There is a high chance that Mumbai Indians will release him before the IPL 2024. They will look to invest in some other overseas pacers who could have played for longer. MI always looks to play overseas pacers in every season.
(2) Chris Jordon
Another Englishmen replaced Jofra Archer in the middle of IPL 2023. He came in as Archer’s replacement and played a few games as well.
In IPL 2023, he played 6 games and manage to take 3 wickets only. He averages 79 and has a strike rate of 44 with the ball. As far as the economy is concerned, his economy is also on the higher side, being 10.77.
Jordan in international cricket and in the IPL
Chris Jordan has been playing international cricket for so many years now. And he has done well for England. Especially in death overs. He is considered as death overs specialist. Jordan has the ability to restrict runs and to nail those pin-point yorkers. He is the kind of player who can give you crucial runs with the bat in the lower order.
But his IPL performances over the years haven’t justified his skill set. He has been in and out of the teams in IPL history because of his poor performances.
Chris Jordan’s IPL numbers:-
In 34 matches, Jordan has taken 30 wickets with an average of 35.67 and a strike rate of 22.27. His economy is 9.61 with the best figures of 4 for 11.
With the bat, he has scored 81 runs with an average of 8.10 and a strike rate of 105.19. Clearly, his numbers in the IPL are pretty ordinary.
Mumba Indians will look for other options in the IPL 2024 auction and release Chris Jordan.
(3) Riley Meredith
Riley Meredith came in as Jhye Richardson in the IPL 2023. He played 5 games and took 7 wickets as well. But his role was to bowl in the last few overs. And he hasn’t done well in that role. His economy was 10.53 in the season. His average was 29.57 and a strike rate of 16.86. Riley Meredith’s best figures in the season were 2 for 33.
MI might release him as well
Overall, he has played 18 games in the IPL and took 19 wickets. He averages 32.21 and has a strike rate of 20.42. His overall economy is 9.46 in the IPL with the best figures of 2 for 24. Mumbai Indians might release him before the IPL 2024 auction.
MI’s performance in the last few seasons:-
Mumbai Indians failed to reach the playoffs in IPL 2021 and 2022. In IPL 2023, they reach the playoffs but failed to reach the final after they lost the 2nd qualifier against Gujarat Titans.
Conclusion
These performances will force Mumbai Indians to rethink about their squad. They will look to release a few players before the IPL 2024 auction. Let’s see which player will be released by the MI.
