Chennai Super Kings is set to play their 10th IPL final after they defeated defending champions Gujarat Titans in qualifier 1 by 15 runs. Chennai Super Kings vs Gujarat Titans (Qualifier 1)
Venue: MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai
Before that, CSK hasn’t won a single game against GT, including the first game of IPL 2023. Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to field first. His decision backfired and the CSK’s openers added 87 runs for the first wicket.
After the partnership broked by Mohit Sharma, the runs started to slow down. The pitch was on the slower side and the batters found it hard to go big in the later part of the inning.
Chennai Super Kings managed to put 172 runs on the board. It was a good total considering the nature of the pitch.
Gujarat Titans batters didn’t get the momentum going in a run chase
When GT came out to chase, they lost W Saha and Hardik Pandya in the powerplay. Only Shubman Gill spends some time at the crease. But MS Dhoni brings back Deepak Chahar into the attack and the pacer got the better of Shubman Gill.
Rashid Khan gave some hope but fell short
At one stage, GT was 98 for 6 and was in trouble. Rashid Khan came in and played some good shots. He scared CSK for a while. But that was not enough for his team to go over the line.
Chennai Super Kings won the game by 15 runs. Ruturaj Gaikwad was adjudged Man of the Match for his 60 off 44 balls.
DJ Bravo feared to face Mumbai Indians
DJ Bravo, the bowling coach of CSK said he don’t won’t CSK to face MI in the IPL 2023 finals. He said this because Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have played 4 finals together in IPL history, and Mumbai won three out of those.
The number clearly shows MI dominated CSK when it comes to the IPL finals. After a win against GT, DJ Bravo was in conversation with Star Sports has said- “No, I am scared of Mumbai (laughs). We don’t see it like that. All three other teams are dangerous teams. They are quality teams.”
After a while, he said his team is ready to face anyone in the final and wished other teams as well.
“Yeah, I mean, honestly, my personal feeling, I don’t want Mumbai. My friend Pollard knows that. But, jokes aside, all the best to the other teams. We are looking forward to whoever we are going to face. I think we have got it,” DJ Bravo added.
CSK-MI Head to Head
Overall, both teams have played 36 games against each other. Out of those, Mumbai Indians has won 20 games and Chennai Super Kings has managed to win 16 games.
MI beat CSK in three IPL finals (2013, 2015, and 2019) and CSK has only won one final against MI in 2010.
Mumbai Indians to face Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2
Mumbai Indians have beaten Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the eliminator to storm into qualifier 2. Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first.
MI started positively but lost both openers in a span of 6 balls. Then the two in-form MI batters Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav added 66 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Naveen ul Haq took both batters in one over and got LSG back in the game. Green scored 41 off 23 balls and Surya scored 33 off 20 balls. Tilak Varma scored 26 off 22 and N Wadhera played a useful cameo of 23 off 12 balls. MI scored 182 on the board in the first inning.
MI’s pacers get the job done for the team
When LSG came out to chase a target, they lost 2 wickets for just 23 runs. Captain Krunal Pandya and Marcus Stoinis added 46 runs for the 3rd wicket, where the latter scored the bulk of runs. But after that, MI’s bowlers didn’t give a sniff to LSG.
Akash Madhwal was outstanding with the ball, taking 5 wickets for just 5 runs. It is now the best figure in the IPL playoffs history. He was also the player of the match and only M Stoinis showed some fight for LSG.
MI will now play the 2nd qualifier against GT. They will look to play their 5th final against CSK, and 7th overall final in the IPL. On the other hand, GT will get another chance to go into the IPL 2023 finals and will look to play their 2nd consecutive IPL final.
Conclusion
CSK will wait and see who will come out well in the 2nd qualifier. DJ Bravo would not want MI to come in the finals. Jokes apart, let’s see who will play the finals with CSK.
