Ricky Ponting (AUSTRALIA): 4
Australian former batsman Ricky Ponting is hailed as one of the most outstanding captains having led his men to four ICC titles. He rose to fame by winning the 2003 ODI World Cup after a 125-run victory against India in the final match.
Later, Ponting claimed the next title after winning the Champions Trophy 2006, defeating West Indies by 8 wickets at the Brabourne Stadium. Following the success, he lifted the 2007 ODI World Cup trophy with a 53-run win against Sri Lanka at Bridgetown.
The right-handed batter won his last ICC title in the Champions Trophy 2009, triumphing over New Zealand by 6 wickets at SuperSport Park, Centurion.
MS Dhoni (INDIA): 3
Former Team India’s wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni ranks second in the list of legendary captains to win three ICC trophies. Under MSD’s era, Team India won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007 by winning over the arch-rivals Pakistan in the last-over thriller of the final match.
Dhoni’s next title victory as captain in 2011 would be cherished forever, as he led India to lift ODI World Cup victory after 28 years, beating Sri Lanka in the finals by 6 wickets. Previously, the Indian cricket team was crowned the 50-over World Cup champions in 1983 under Kapil Dev’s captaincy.
Captain Cool achieved his last ICC title in 2013, when he won the seventh edition of the Champions Trophy, beating England by 5 runs in Birmingham.
Clive Lloyd (WEST INDIES): 2
Former West Indies Captain Clive Lloyd ranks third among the list of captains who have won multiple ICC trophies. He started his journey by winning the inaugural edition of the ODI World Cup in 1975, defeating Aussies by 17 runs at the Lord’s.
After four years, Lloyd won his second ICC title at the same venue by winning the 1979 ODI World Cup, triumphing over England by 92 runs.
Darren Sammy (WEST INDIES): 2
Former West Indies skipper Darren Sammy leveled his fellow countrymen Lloyd’s record of 2 ICC titles by triumphing in two T20 World Cup editions. He started his success by winning the 2012 T20 World Cup, defeating Sri Lanka by 36 runs at home in Colombo.
Once again Sammy led his team to lift the T20 World Cup 2016 trophy, beating England in the final match by 4 wickets at Eden Gardens.
Pat Cummins (AUSTRALIA): 2
Australian pace bowler Pat Cummins became the role model of success within a few months of taking up the captaincy role. He led his team to the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final, beating India by 209 runs at the Kennington Oval, London. In the same year, Cummins added a second ICC title to his name, leading Aussies to the ODI World Cup triumph with a 6-wicket victory over India at home in Ahmedabad.
With few months left for the WTC 2025 final, the 31-year-old aims for his third ICC title to level MS Dhoni’s record.
Rohit Sharma (INDIA): 2
Rohit Sharma—India’s current skipper in ODIs and Tests will always be remembered as the brilliant captain in cricket history. After concluding as the runner-up of the 2023 World Cup, the 37-year-old bounced back and showed his worth as a leader by winning the T20 World Cup 2024 with a 7-run victory against South Africa in the finals.
Rohit’s next ICC title came in the recently concluded Champions Trophy 2025 after defeating New Zealand by 4 wickets in Dubai. Also, the right-handed batter became the second Indian captain after Dhoni to win two ICC titles.
