The fans are waiting for the BCCI to announce the IPL player retention rules. They are excited to know the number of retentions the BCCI will allow to the franchise before the IPL 2025 mega auction. The BCCI is expected to announce the IPL player retention rules by the end of August 2024. So there is not much time left before we get to know the retention rules for IPL 2025.
How many players will the BCCI allow the franchise to retain?
According to the report in Cricbuzz, the BCCI might allow 6 players to be retained before the auction. This number will also include the use of an RTM (Right to Match) card. Two players from outside the country (overseas), one uncapped player, and three capped Indian players will make up the six retentions.
Will there be a mega auction before the IPL 2025?
In a meeting of BCCI and franchise owners, it is learned that some are on the positive side of having a mega auction while some are on the other side. But, the BCCI is likely to continue with the mega auction, to bring continuity and growth to the game.
Some franchise, who has good and balanced teams doesn’t want a mega auction, citing it takes a lot of time to build a strong team. On the other hand, teams with not much balance want to have a mega auction before the IPL 2025. They want to start from scratch and build a new core group.
The BCCI secretary Jay Shah said the board has heard the views of all the franchises and will take the decision after considering all the points.
“We’ve heard the views of all the franchises. For us, a minority view is as important as the majority opinion. Ultimately the office-bearers (of the BCCI) will decide. Those who have a good side said there is no need for the big auction. Teams without a balanced side wanted the mega auction. Continuity is important as shuffling, for the growth of the game. – The BCCI secretary Jay Shah told the media.
IPL 2025 to have 84 games instead of 74
The decision to raise the number of games from 74 to 84 for the upcoming season will also be a hot issue of conversation. With the expansion of IPL from eight to 10 teams, the number of matches hasn’t increased proportionately. If the BCCI follows the home and away system, teams will play a total of 94 games, including the playoffs and the double round-robin games.
It might, however, prove difficult given the players’ heavy schedules, a full international calendar, and a short window.
“We will collectively decide. We also have to factor in the workload of the players and the window. It’s in the contract but it is up to the BCCI to decide.”
Will the impact player rule be there in IPL 2025?
If we look from the players’ point of view, so many players have come up against the impact player rule. The impact player rule has impacted the growth of all-rounders in Indian cricket. Players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Axar Patel, Mohammad Siraj, etc are not in favor of the impact player rule.
The BCCI secretary also thinks the same. But, at the same time, he said the BCCI will look into it from the broadcaster’s point of view who pays a lot of money. The BCCI will decide on this soon.
We had a long chat with the franchise owners in the recent meeting we had. The impact player rule has its pros and cons. The negative is that it makes the allrounder’s role redundant. The positive is it creates a spot for an Indian player to showcase his talent. We should also think about the broadcaster, who is paying a lot of money. But as an administrator for me, the game is bigger. We will decide in a few days.” – Jay Shah on the impact player rule.
