BCCI restricts Shardul Thakur  from participating in major tournaments: A Huge blow to CSK in IPL 2024

Ahead of the IPL 2024, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faces a huge blow as BCCI restricts Shardul Thakur from participating in big tournaments. The Indian all-rounder hasn’t received a clearance from the NCA (National Cricket Academy).

During the South Africa tour, Shardul faced a severe ankle injury. It resulted in the selectors deciding to sideline him out of the ongoing test series against England.  Furthermore, the selectors excluded him from the Mumbai Squad in the Ranji Trophy 2024.

After losing the first test match against South Africa by an innings and 32 runs, he was dropped from the squad. Rather, fast bowlers like Prasidh Krishna and Mukesh Kumar got a chance and were selected for the subsequent test match.

Earlier, during the optional training session, Shardul faced a blow on his left shoulder ahead of the second test match against South Africa.

BCCI restricts Shardul Thakur from participating in the ongoing Ranji Trophy tournament. The board decided to allow him to play only if they received confirmation from the NCA. As a result, Thakur had to miss out on the game against Kerela in Thiruvananthapuram.

On the other side, Mumbai was able to win the first three matches against Bihar, Andhra, and Kerala in Shardul’s absence. Shivam Dube’s led side lost its only match against UP by 2 wickets.

Reasons why BCCI restricts Shardul Thakur  from Participating in important games: Mumbai Chief Selector gives an explanation

Mumbai Chief Selector Raju Kulkarni in recent times clarified the reason why BCCI restricts Shardul Thakur and NCA not giving any clearance to allow him in the Ranji Trophy.

Kulkarni pointed out that Shardul had some severe issues with his ankle. The NCA medical experts advised him to take rest for at least two weeks. For further assessment, the Indian all-rounder traveled to Bangalore. The chief selector said that he would be available for the selection soon.

Raju Kulkarni additionally stated that the selection committee is still waiting for NCA’s Return To Play (RTP) report. Until then, the procedure needs to be followed by the entire committee.

Kulkarni promised that as soon as the report comes, the selection panel will have the clearance to pick him up for the Ranji Trophy.

Finally, the chief selector hopes that they will get the RTP report before the 6th round of the tournament.

Mumbai will play its sixth round against Chhattisgarh. The match starts from 9th February 2024 onwards at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, Raipur.

Some experts were hoping that Shardul would get a clearance along with Prithvi Shaw. Luckily, Prithvi Shaw got the clearance from NCA and started playing in Ranji Trophy 2024. However, with the confirmation yet to be received from NCA, Shardul Thakur should make himself available for the next match.

Shardul Thakur Aims for IPL 2024 and T20 World Cup 2024 Selection:

After the ICC World Cup 2023, Shardul Thakur played a couple of matches for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy to strengthen his position for IPL 2024 and ICC T20 World Cup 2024. He played against Saurashtra and Tripura.

Earlier, Kolkata Knight Riders released him ahead of the mini-auction following his poor performance in IPL 2023. Interestingly, Chennai Super Kings roped Shardul Thakur for INR 4 crores during the IPL 2024 auction.

The upcoming IPL 2024 tournament is the only chance for Shardul to deliver an impactful performance. Consequently, he can enhance his chances of getting selected for the T20 World Cup in June this year.

BCCI restricts Shardul Thakur  from participating in major tournaments: Conclusive Facts

Shardul Thakur was supposed to lead the pace bowling unit of the Mumbai team. However, with no positive signs of his ankle injury improvement, the NCA had to delay providing clearance to him.

He lastly played for Team India in the first test match against South Africa on boxing day. Shardul scored only 24 and 2 runs with bat in both the innings. On the other side, his pace bowling wasn’t effective, conceding 101 runs in 19 overs by taking only a wicket.

The Mumbai selectors have added Himanshu Singh as an ideal and promising replacement for Shardul Thakur in the squad as the 16th member. Himanshu as a talented off-spinner can take crucial wickets for his team on a spin-friendly track.

Possibly, if Shardul Thakur could get clearance before the IPL, his chances of playing T20 World Cup 2024 will be maximized. It is because the Indian all-rounder will be playing under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. He could get a valuable experience from the legendary cricketer to nurture his skills.

Moreover, Mumbai needs an all-rounder like Shardul Thakur who can fuel up the bowling unit as well as act as a handy batsman at the lower-middle order in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024.
