BCCI Could Surprise Everyone With IPL 2025 Retention Rules Soon

The preparation for the IPL 2025 is in full swing with the teams still waiting for the announcement from the BCCI on the player retention rules. Some franchises are also looking to in-board the support staff after the old staff left. But, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) hasn’t made it to the final call regarding the IPL 2025 retention rules. They had a meeting with the IPL franchises earlier this year, and will consider all the perspectives and viewpoints of different franchises.

BCCI unsure regarding the IPL 2025 retention rules

The BCCI hasn’t decided on the IPL 2025 retention rules with the franchises are still looking for an announcement. They wanted to know the players’ retention policy as soon as possible so that they could make a draft plan regarding the IPL 2025 mega auction, and which players to keep and which players to leave.

The BCCI had a meeting with all the franchise owners earlier this year, to discuss the agenda on a number of players retaining allowed, the existence of the impact player rule, having a mega auction or not, bringing back the uncapped player rule, etc. Different franchises had different views and suggestions on the above agendas in a meeting with the BCCI. The board will discuss all those points with the IPL (Indian Premier League) governing council and take the decision that is fair for all the teams.

BCCI delays the announcement on IPL 2025 retention rules, and could surprises the franchises

Earlier, it was expected that the BCCI would announce the IPL 2025 retention rules by the end of August. Then, it will be delayed till the mid-September. Now, according to the latest report from Cricbuzz, the BCCI will announce the players’ retention rules by the end of September. That means the franchises have to wait for about two weeks or maybe less to know the IPL 2025 retention rules.

It is learned that the BCCI will decide their Annual General Meeting (AGM), which is set to take place on September 29. The AGM will happen in Bengaluru, along with the launch of the new National Cricket Academy (NCA).

Why did the BCCI delay the players’ retention rule announcement?

The BCCI is unsure because of the different demands of different franchises. In a meeting with the IPL franchises, there are different viewpoints from different franchises.

Some franchises who have done well in the last two seasons wanted to have 8 or more retentions so that they can retain their core group. Going by the reports, teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Kolkata Knights (KKR), who have a settled core group are the teams who want more retentions.

On the other hand, some teams like Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) might want to have fewer retentions. They would love to build a new core group in the mega auction. Some teams even don’t want a retention at all.

Earlier, there were reports which suggested that there were some heated arguments between KKR and PBKS representatives on the number of players allowed to be retained. After which, board secretary Jay Shah has to come and clarify the matter with a statement.

BCCI considering 3 + 1 retention formula

➣ IPL 2025 Rules: What Is 3+1 Rule In IPL Mega Auction?

With teams going through major changes, the IPL 2025 Mega Auction looks to be a game-changer.

During the previous IPL cycle, teams could keep up to four players on their team. A delicate balance was struck between retaining a core group of players and bringing in new talent through the auction process with this retention policy. But as the league grows, there’s a need for change.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is presently considering the 3+1 retention formula. This is what it comprises:

  1. Three Retained Players: Every team has the option to directly retain three players from their current roster. These retained players become the foundation of the team, fostering continuity and stability.
  2. Right to Match (RTM) Card: Along with the three direct retentions, teams are also allowed to use one Right to Match (RTM) card. This card enables them to match the highest bid for a player during the auction, allowing the team to retain that player.

➣ Pros and Cons of the 3+1 Rule: IPL 2025

Pros

  1. Team Identity: The 3+1 rule creates a balance by maintaining a team’s core identity through retained players while encouraging competitive dynamics through the auction process.
  2. Auction Excitement: The IPL auctions are a thrilling event, filled with bidding battles and surprising turns. The 3+1 rule helps preserve this excitement.

Cons

  1. Fan Base Concerns: Some franchises express concerns about building a loyal fan base when star players frequently switch teams. For example, players like Virat Kohli, who have become closely associated with a single franchise (such as RCB), may encounter challenges if they are transferred to another team.
  2. Limited Retentions: The 3+1 rule limits the number of players a team can retain, forcing teams to make strategic decisions, carefully weighing established stars against rising talent.

Mega auction is the preference of the BCCI

Similar to the IPL retention rules, teams with the settled core group don’t want the mega auctions to happen. That’s not the case with the teams who wanted to build a new team, with less retention.

The board is also considering keeping the mega auction intact, for the growth and competitiveness of the tournament.

What about the impact player and an uncapped player rule?

Earlier, it is learned that the CSK (Chennai Super Kings) franchise asks the board to bring back the old uncapped player rule. If it happens, CSK can retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player, for a lesser amount.

Not just CSK, KKR can also retain Sunil Narine as he also played his last international game in 2019.

As far as the impact player is concerned, the players and the broadcasters are not on the same page. We have heard from time to time from players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Axar Patel, Mohammad Siraj, etc who are not a fan of the impact player rule. The main reason for that is not having enough opportunity for the bowlers, more inclined in favor of batters. Also, it won’t allow the all-rounders to have a go. Teams replace a proper batter with a proper bowler and vice-versa.

But, the broadcasters are in support of this rule as it engages more viewers.
