Hardik-Yashasvi Trade: The proposed swap between Hardik Pandya of Mumbai Indians and Yashasvi Jaiswal of Rajasthan Royals has lost momentum ahead of IPL 2027. The potential trade of Mumbai Indians’ Hardik Pandya and Yashasvi Jaiswal from Rajasthan Royals has stalled ahead of IPL 2027. Reportedly, the two franchises had been in talks about a deal for several months, but progress wasn’t made. Neither team is known to be making any active efforts to negotiate the proposed deal as of Oct. 18.
The two players have different strengths on a team. Hardik will supply pace, power, and leadership experience, while Jaiswal will be a left-handed opener who will bolster Mumbai’s top-order for years to come.
How Did the Hardik-Yashasvi Trade Rumours Begin?
The reported discussions around the Hardik-Jaiswal Trade emerged as franchises began preparing for the 2027 season and reviewing their squad requirements. A direct exchange involving two established Indian players would have been one of the biggest moves of the off-season.
There was a cricketing argument for both sides. Mumbai could look to strengthen its batting at the top, while Rajasthan could benefit from adding a fast-bowling all-rounder who can finish innings and contribute with the ball.
However, reports citing Cricbuzz said the teams held preliminary discussions but did not reach an agreement. The latest information points to stalled talks rather than a completed deal.
1. Captaincy Questions Made the Deal More Complicated
Leadership could have been one of the difficult points in any discussion involving Hardik. He returned to Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2024 season and took over as captain from Rohit Sharma. A move away from Mumbai would raise questions about his role at another franchise.
Rajasthan, meanwhile, would have to decide how Hardik fits into its leadership plans after trading former captain Sanju Samson to Chennai Super Kings. The Royals received Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran in that deal.
However, neither franchise has confirmed that captaincy demands ended the talks. Reports about leadership concerns should therefore be treated with caution.
Mumbai also has decisions to make about its coaching staff. Reports published in October said the franchise was looking to settle its coaching arrangements before addressing the captaincy question for IPL 2027. That uncertainty makes a major player trade harder to assess.
2. Rajasthan Royals Have a Reason to Keep Jaiswal
Jaiswal’s value to Rajasthan goes beyond his performances as an opener. He is an established Indian international batter who can provide attacking starts and build an innings when the team loses early wickets.
With him out of the mix, the No. 1 spot will be a void to fill. The Rajasthan government would have to have faith in another player filling the void if they were to face such an individual throughout the season.
The Royals do have a potential replacement in South Africa youngster Lhuan-dre Pretorius. For San Francisco Unicorns, he has amassed 465 runs with a strike rate of 176.13 in the 2026 Major League Cricket season. But his recent performances have bolstered his argument for more game time.
Still, strong performances in another T20 competition do not guarantee success over a full IPL season. Rajasthan would have to weigh that risk before agreeing to part with Jaiswal.
3. Mumbai and Rajasthan Had Different Squad Needs
Hardik and Jaiswal fill very different roles, which made the proposed exchange interesting but difficult to complete.
For Mumbai, Jaiswal could strengthen the opening combination and offer a long-term option at the top of the order. For Rajasthan, Hardik could add pace bowling, middle-order hitting and experience in pressure situations.
Yet both players would leave a gap behind if traded. Mumbai would lose an Indian all-rounder who can contribute in two departments, while Rajasthan would lose a proven opener.
The clubs needed to decide whether those changes would improve their overall teams, not simply whether the players had similar market value. A swap that looks fair on paper may still leave one or both sides with an unbalanced XI.

4. Contract and Purse Issues Also Matter
Jaiswal remains contracted to Rajasthan for at least one more season, according to reports published on October 14. That means Mumbai cannot simply sign him without the Royals agreeing to the move.
Money is another consideration. Player trades affect the salary commitments each franchise carries into the next auction. The amount available for new signings depends on existing contracts, releases, and the applicable IPL rules.
The IPL’s salary-cap framework for 2027 is set at ₹157 crore, including the auction purse, incremental performance pay, and match fees. That figure is the overall cap, not the amount every team can spend freely at the auction.
Although reports have linked the stalled discussions to purse calculations, neither franchise has publicly confirmed a specific financial disagreement.
