WPL 2024 | A List of Retained & Released Players

After a successful first season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023, the tournament is set to have a 2nd season, likely to start on March 04, 2024. Mumbai Indians (MI) won the first season in which five teams competed. WPL 2024 also will have five teams competing for the title.

For WPL 2024, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) announced the list of retained and released players on Thursday (October 19).

Today, we will see the full list of retained and dropped players of all five teams in WPL 2024. We will also tell you some history of this league as well. So let’s start.

BCCI Giving Priority To Women’s Cricket

Cricket in India has a massive audience. And people in India worship cricketers and passionately follow the game. But mostly it is for men’s cricket.

But in the last few years, India’s women’s cricket team has also done well and grown up over the years. Considering this, the BCCI started the Women’s Premier League (WPL), just like the IPL (Indian Premier League) for men’s cricket.

BCCI announced the list of retained and dropped players for WPL 2024

BCCI conducted the first season of WPL this year in which Mumbai Indians came out well to win the title. Now, WPL 2024 is set to take place next year with the auction likely to happen in February 2024.

Although the WPL 2024 auction is still 4 months away, the BCCI has announced the list of retained and dropped players from all five teams. A total of 60 players have been retained. 29 players are released across five teams. Let’s see the list of all five teams one by one.

Mumbai Indians Women

No better start than the inaugural season’s champion. Harmanpreet Kaur-led side has won the title by beating Delhi Capitals Women in the final by 7 wickets. While chasing a target of 132, the partnership between Nat Sciver-brunt and captain Harmanpreet Kaur helps the team to ensure an easy win for MI Women.

MI players ruled the list of top 5 run-getters and top 5 wicket takers. The franchise has released four players from the squad and retained 13 players. A retained player includes captain Harmanpreet Singh, Pooja Vastrakar, and Hayley Matthews.

Delhi Capitals Women

DC Women tops the points table in the WPL 2023 with 6 wins in 8 games. They directly qualified for the final because they were the table toppers. But they fell short against Mumbai Indians in the final. They will look to go one step further in the WPL 2024.

DC has retained 15 players in the squad for the WPL 2024, including Meg Lanning, S Verma, and Poonam Yadav.

Gujarat Giants

The franchise had a very poor outing in the first season of the WPL. They finished last in the points table with only 2 wins in 8 games with a net run rate of -2.220.

Gujarat Giants has some tough calls to make before the WPL 2024 auction. They will look to rectify themselves in the next season. And for that, they have to make good decisions on the auction table. The franchise has released the most number of players (11 players) and retained only 8 players.

Royal Challengers Bangalore Women

RCB has retained some key players including Smriti Mandhana, Richa Ghosh, and S Devine.

Released players:- Dané Van Niekerk*, Erin Burns*, Komal Zanzad, Megan Schutt*, Poonam Khemnar, Preeti Bose, Sahana Pawar

UP Warriorz

UP had a decent outing in the first season. They finished at No. 3 in the points table with 4 wins in 8 games. UP lost an eliminator against MI and got out of the tournament. The franchise retained 13 players and released 4 players before WPL 2024.
