We are into the business end of the IPL 2023 and we saw some amazing performances in the tournament with both, bat and ball. Today, we will talk about the batting performances, and more particularly the opening batsmen performances in the tournament.
Openers have scored the most runs every year
We have seen over the years that the openers have the luxury in T20s and they get more balls and more time to score runs. That’s why, most of the time, the highest run-getter in the Indian Premier League in every season is the opener.
Also, even if the opener didn’t make it to the top of the highest run-getters, it will be a top-order batter (either opener or No. 3 player) most of the time. Because they get more time at the crease, they scored the most runs for the team. And the team who does well in the tournament has an opener who made an impact most of the time.

A few openers who did well in the tournament
There are a few openers who did well in the IPL 2023 including the young Indian openers. Also, there are a few overseas openers and veteran openers who did well in the tournament. Let’s see the list first.
List of the openers who impressed the most in the IPL 2023
(1) Faf du Plessis
With 702 runs in 13 games, the RCB skipper is sitting at the top of the highest runs getter list in the IPL 2023. He has been the mainstay for RCB and leading the team from the front. It’s Faf du Plessis’ best IPL season in terms of runs scoring. And he is doing it at a later stage of his career.
He is by far the best opener in the IPL 2023 so far. Faf’s average in 13 games is 58.50 and he has an outstanding strike rate of 153.95. He has scored 8 fifties in the tournament so far.
(2) Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill is the 2nd highest run scorer so far in the IPL 2023. He has scored 576 runs in 13 innings with an average of 48 and a strike rate of 146.19. In those 13 games, he scored 4 fifties and a hundred as well.
Shubman is one of the main contributors to the Gujarat Titans’ success so far in the IPL 2023. He is doing well in international cricket in all three formats and now showing his class in IPL as well.
We might see him playing for India for so long in all formats. He is one of the best young Indian openers currently.
(3) Yashasvi Jaiswal
Another young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal impressed us the most in IPL 2023. He is doing well for RR but unfortunately, his team’s chances to go into the playoffs are very less. Otherwise, he will get more games to score runs.
His shot-making ability is immense and he also becomes the fastest half-centurian in the IPL history. He scored a fifty in just 13 balls to go past KL Rahul and P Cummins, who scored fifties in 14 balls.
Right now, he is at No. 3 on the list with 575 runs with an average of 47.92 and a strike rate of 166.18.
(4) Virat Kohli
An old wine that is getting better and better. He is a tried and tested opener in the IPL and has done well in this role. We cannot forget his IPL 2016 season, when he was going like a beast, with 973 runs and 4 hundred in a single season.
This year as well, he scored 538 runs and recently scored a hundred against SRH. Sometimes, his strike rate has a question mark but he played an anchor role and capitalized later in the inning.
(5) Devon Conway
Incidentally, all the openers we are talking about are the top 5 run-getters as well. As we discussed before, openers mostly score more runs. The New Zealander has scored 498 runs in 12 innings with an average of 149.80 and a strike rate of 134.59. His impressive range of shots is mesmerizing to watch. He is one of the openers who impressed us in IPL 2023.
(6) Ruturaj Gaikwad
Ruturaj has started the IPL 2023 very well but his consistency has dipped later. Still, he scored 425 runs in 12 innings with an average of 38 and a strike rate of 146. He is a consistent performer for CSK in the last few years.
(7) Ishan Kishan
The left-hander hasn’t scored too many runs. But still, he performed decently to give MI some good starts. He scored 425 runs in 13 games with an average of 32.69 and a strike rate of 144.56.
So these are the few openers who do well in the IPL 2023. There are a few other openers as well like Jos Buttler, David Warner, etc who scored runs as well. But they haven’t performed up to their own standards. You expect more from these players.
