The ICC CWC 2023 has completed 22 games already and we have seen some amazing performances from the teams and the players as well. We have seen some upsets as well when the Netherlands restricts the Proteas in Dharamsala. Afghanistan, already having their most successful campaign has won against England and Pakistan in Delhi and Chennai respectively.
Today, we will talk about the CWC 2023 highest run scorers and highest wicket-takers. We will pick who will finish as the highest run scorer and the highest wicket-taker in this Cricket World Cup 2023. So let’s start.
Batters having some fun out there in CWC 2023
As we have already seen some records have already been broken in the CWC 2023. A record of most centuries after a certain game has already been broken. Aiden Markram scored the fastest century in the history of the ODI World Cup so far. A few other batters have scored the fastest century for their respective countries in the ODI World Cup history.
One of the main reasons for that is some good batting wickets in most venues in the CWC 2023. Some venues like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, etc have offered some good batting wickets in the tournament. Delhi is traditionally a slowish wicket where the batters find it difficult to score freely. But unexpectedly, the wicket at Delhi has played well for batters.
So it is not hard to predict that a few more records in batting will be broken at the end of the Cricket World Cup 2023. Let’s see how it panned out.
Bowlers also made use of the conditions
Although the batters have had some fun in the tournament so far, a few bowlers have also done well in whatever conditions they have got. They exploit whatever conditions they have on offer and make good use of it. Also, the pitches at Chennai, Lucknow, and Dharamsala have offered a little more help for the bowlers, where the run-making is not so fluent.
Let’s see the highest run scorers and wicket-takers in the tournament so far.
Highest Run Scorers in CWC 2023 so far
NOTE: As we are writing this article, South Africa is playing their 5th game against Bangladesh. While batting first, Quinton de Kock has completed his 3rd century in this Cricket World Cup. He is just 21 runs away to go past Virat Kohli, who is the highest run scorer so far in CWC 2023 with 354 runs.
Virat Kohli is in a rich vein of form
Team India’s one of the most trusted batters has been in great form in this tournament. He has played a few crucial knocks for Team India. Especially when the team needs him the most. In the first game, when India lost 3 early wickets against Australia, Virat Kohli played an outstanding knock of 85 in a run chase of 200 on a tricky Chennai wicket.
He has scored a century against Bangladesh in a run chase as well. And then scored 95 against New Zealand when again Team India is looking in some trouble. Unfortunately, he missed his well-deserved century by 5 runs only.
The right-hander is in good touch and there is a possibility that he will finish as the top run scorer in the CWC 2023.
Classy Quinton showing his worth in the tournament
We have all seen Quinton de Kock playing so well for South Africa over the years. But his ODI WC numbers were not so good till the CWC 2023. Till now, in the 5 games, he has scored 3 centuries in CWC 2023. He has scored centuries against Sri Lanka, and Australia, and playing on 103 right now against Bangladesh.
His form is crucial for the Proteas’ success in the tournament. In his last Cricket World Cup, as Quinton has decided to retire from ODIs after that, he will try to finish on a high.
Who will be the top scorer in the CWC 2023?
We have picked Virat Kohli and Quinton de Kock who might finish as the highest run scorer in the CWC 2023. Also, the top three batters always have the opportunity to score big in the tournament.
Who will finish as the highest wicket-taker in the tournament?
Right now, Mitchell Santner is sitting at the top of the list with 12 wickets. But we are picking Jasprit Bumrah and Matt Henry to finish as the highest wicket-taker in the CWC 2023. Both are very good new ball bowlers, who can swing the ball both ways.
They are genuine wicket takers and Bumrah is also a very good death overs bowler, the phase where he will not just contain runs, but pick wickets as well.
So we have picked Jasprit Bumrah and Matt Henry as the highest wicket-takers in the tournament. Right now, the former is at No. 2 in the list with 11 wickets in 5 games and the latter is at No. 4 with 10 wickets in 5 games.
