The Bangladesh Cricket Team has announced the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023. Shakib Al Hasan will lead the side after Tamim Iqbal gives up the ODI captaincy earlier this month. The 17 men’s squad includes some youngsters like Tanzid Hasan and Shamim Hossain. They get the reward for their outstanding performances recently. The experienced Mahmudullah is still not in consideration in the selector’s mind.
Tanzid and Naim got a reward for their performances
Tanzid Hasan, whose nickname is Tamim as well, gets a maiden call-up for Tamim Iqbal. He does well recently in the ACC Emerging Asia Cup 2023. In 4 innings, he scored 179 runs at an average of 44.75 and with an outstanding strike rate of almost 117.
Perfect replacement for Tamim Iqbal?
Tanzid Hasan could be a perfect replacement for Tamim Iqbal, who is set to miss the Asia Cup 2023 due to injury. He also played well in the ACC Emerging Asia Cup final, while chasing a target of 212 against India. Till the time Tanzid and Naim were at the crease, the chase is under control. But unfortunately, after their partnership, Bangladesh collapsed and got bowled out for 160.
Bangladesh cricket team’s chief selector Minhajul Abedin has shown confidence in Tanzid’s selection. He said – “We are quite confident about Tanzid Hasan. He has been nursed for a long time in the High-Performance program. Hasan did well in the Emerging Cup. I am hopeful that he can deliver something for the team.”
Naim – The other option in the top order
Mohammad Naim is the other option in the top order for Bangladesh Cricket Team in the Asia Cup 2023.
Naim has also done well in the ACC Emerging Asia Cup 2023, along with Tanzid Hasan. In 4 innings, he has scored 154 runs at an average of 51.33 and a strike rate of 110.

“Naim did well in domestic cricket. He didn’t do that well in the Emerging Cup. But he is in a stable situation. He has a bit of international experience too. That’s why he has been given another chance.
Shakib Al Hasan To Lead The Bangladesh Team
The experienced all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will captain the side after Tamim Iqbal relinquishes the role. His experience will help the team in the Asia Cup 2023.
Shakib will also lead the Bangladesh Cricket Team in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. He has already led the side in the past. Also, he led the team in the ICC ODI WC in 2011 as well.
Tamim Iqbal will miss the Asia Cup 2023
The elegant left-hander Tamim Iqbal will not be there with the team in the Asia Cup 2023 due to injury. He is eyeing a comeback in the New Zealand series, which will happen just after the Asia Cup 2023.
When he gave up the ODI captaincy, BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) talks to Shakib Al Hasan and decided to give him that role.
Tamim also announced his international retirement with immediate effect. But after Bangladesh’s PM Shaikh Hasina talks to him, he decided to reverse the decision.
No place for Mahmudullah
Mahmudullah used to be one of the main players in Bangladesh’s ODI setup. But he hasn’t played since March 2023. He was rested in March and since then, missed the series against Ireland and Afghanistan.
The selectors haven’t included Mahmudullah as they found some other options in Shamim, Afif, and Mahedi.
“We held long discussions about Mahmudullah in the early stages. We have put him off after considering the opposition and conditions. I think it was a good decision by the team management. We have spoken about it with the coach and captain.” – Abedin said at the press conference.
Taijul Islam and Rony Talukdar, who were part of the ODI squad against Afghanistan, were also left out of the Asia Cup 2023 squad.
A few youngsters as all-rounders in the team
Players like Shamim Hossain, Afif Hossain, and Mahedi Hasan will play an important role to give the right balance to the team with their all-round skills. They can be used for both the department (batting and bowling).
Taskin and Mustafizur lead the pace attack
Bangladesh have two of their experienced pacers in Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed. Other than them, they have Shoriful, Ebadot, and Mahmud in their squad for the pace bowling option.
